Temporarily suspending an automatic extension of temporary stay for foreign nationals by January 15, 2022

Previously, the Immigration Department announced the automatic extension of temporary stay, in which, foreigners who entered Vietnam under the visa exemption certificate, e-visa or tourist visa on or after March 1, 2020 continued to be an automatically extended temporary stay until the end of December 31, 2021 and can leave the country during the above period without having to apply for an extension of stay. In case of entry before March 1, 2020 if it is proved that they are trapped due to the Covid-19 epidemic, certified by the diplomatic mission by a Note (with Vietnamese translation) or have a written confirmation from a Vietnamese competent authority about being isolated, treated for Covid-19 or other force majeure reasons, will also be considered for the application of an automatic extension of temporary stay until the end of December 31, 2021 and must present the above Note or written confirmation when leaving the country.

However, from January 1, 2022, Vietnam will gradually reopen regular international flights, so with the approval of the competent authorities, the Immigration Department will stop the regular of an automatic extension of temporary stay for foreign nationals from January 15, 2022. It means individuals in this qualifying group may exit Vietnam by January 15, 2022 without having to apply for an extension of stay.
